This was one of those makes that was a long time coming. The poppy print fabric sat hoarded in my stash for over a year before I finally mustered the courage to cut it. As I usually do with a fabric I really love, I couldn’t decide what to do with it, and changed my mind repeatedly without ever breaking out the rotary cutter.
Top: American Apparel; skirt: me made; boots; thrifted
When I finally dared to take the plunge a couple of weeks ago, I was thrilled with the result. The pattern is the skirt portion of the Vanamo Two Piece Cocktail Dress from Named patterns. I made an initial version of this pattern out of some printed linen snatched from a Crate and Barrel outlet, but I really don’t love the result. I may write a post on that at some point if I can get over how ridiculous it looks on me enough to post photos on the internet. This is a modified version of the skirt- mainly just better fitted and with quite a bit of length removed.
I may still make the top portion of the pattern, but at this point I’m leaning towards no. I love the idea of a two piece set in theory, but in practice I know that I look absurd. I do like the cut of the top though, so I may eventually get around to making it up to wear separately.
As I said, I shortened the skirt by several inches so that it would fall above the knee, and I lengthened the front darts and nipped in the side seams about a half inch. I also decided to cut the front on the fold rather than in two pieces to avoid having to pattern match both the front and the back. This may have been a mistake as the spot above the front slit ripped almost immediately and is now heavily reinforced with a bunch of zig zags, bar tacks, and fray check.
The back pattern matching was a roaring success, if I do say so myself. I made it up with an exposed zipper rather than the lapped zipper from the pattern, YOLO. I just love looking at the way those flowers continue right across the back…
Long story short, I love this skirt and plan to make it again and again. It’s the pencil skirt pattern I’ve been looking for for the last 3 years, finally come into my greedy little hands. It fits great, looks great and is quick and fun to sew. How do you guys feel about two piece sets? Any braver souls than I am out there rocking one?
